Why search results give different answers
A plan’s length hides its entry requirement. Nike describes a 10K plan of at least four weeks, while Polar asks beginners to become comfortable with several easy runs of at least 5K before beginning its program. Great Run publishes an eight-week beginner run/walk plan. Those plans are not necessarily contradictory; they begin with different runners.
A shorter plan intended for a runner ready to train consistently.
Its readiness language shows why “beginner” does not always mean starting from zero.
Use the starting-point test
- Comfortable 5K runner: four to six weeks may be enough to extend endurance and rehearse race day.
- 5K run/walker: allow about eight weeks and preserve walk intervals.
- Comfortable 30-minute walker: first build run/walk consistency, then begin the 10K-specific block.
Pick the race after allowing room for a repeated week, illness, travel, and normal life. A rigid date does not make the body adapt faster.
